Passive Fire Protection, Fire Rated Doors,
Barriers and Fire Stopping in Saudi Arabia

Built into the structure itself, passive fire protection contains fire and smoke without activation
or power. Multi Goals installs SBC 801-compliant fire doors, compartment walls, and sealed
penetrations across Saudi Arabia fully Civil Defense inspection-ready.

Passive fire protection contains fire and smoke within a building without requiring any activation, power supply, or human intervention. Where active fire systems detect and respond to fire, passive fire protection is built into the building structure itself, fire rated doors, compartment walls, and fire stopping at every service penetration. Together these elements divide the building into fire-resistant zones, limiting the spread of fire while occupants evacuate and fire brigades respond.

Multi Goals supplies and installs passive fire protection systems across Saudi Arabia. All our installations comply with SBC 801 and Saudi Civil Defense requirements. Saudi Civil Defense inspects passive fire protection alongside active systems at design review, construction inspection, occupancy certification, and annual licence review. Based on our experience across Saudi Arabia annual inspections, passive fire protection failures are far more common than active system failures, yet they receive far less attention during initial construction.

The three most common passive fire protection failures we find at Saudi Arabia Civil Defense annual inspections: fire rated doors propped open with wedges or doorstops rendering them useless as compartment barriers, compartment walls that terminate at the suspended ceiling rather than extending to the structural floor above leaving an unprotected void above the ceiling through which fire and smoke spread freely, and cable penetrations through fire-rated walls that were sealed at original installation but disturbed and left unsealed when new cables were added post-handover.

The Fire Compartmentation Principle

Fire compartmentation divides a building into fire-resistant zones bounded by rated walls, rated floors, and fire rated doors. If fire starts in one compartment, the passive fire protection limits its spread to adjacent zones for the rated resistance period, 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes depending on occupancy and building height per SBC 801, while occupants evacuate and fire brigades respond. The resistance period is only achievable if the compartment boundary is complete: every wall from structural floor to structural floor above, every penetration sealed, every door self-closing and sealing against smoke.

Passive Fire Protection Systems We Install

Multi Goals installs the following passive fire protection systems across all regions of Saudi Arabia:

__________

Fire Rated Doors

FD30, FD60, FD90, and FD120 steel and timber fire rated doors compliant with EN 1634 and UL 10C. A fire rated door’s performance depends entirely on the complete assembly, not just the door leaf. Multi Goals installs complete door sets: leaf, rated frame, self-closing overhead closer, intumescent strip seal, smoke seal on three sides, and threshold drop seal. A fire rated door leaf installed in a non-rated frame provides zero fire resistance. A fire rated door held open with a wedge provides zero compartmentation. Both are inspection failure triggers during Saudi Arabia annual licence reviews.

Fire Rated Doors
Fire Barriers and Rated Partitions

Fire Barriers and Rated Partitions

Fire-rated plasterboard partition systems, fire-rated glazed assemblies, and fire-resistant infill panels. All installations extend from the structural floor to the structural floor above, not just to the suspended ceiling level. This is the single most important installation requirement in fire barrier construction. A partition that reaches only to the underside of a suspended ceiling leaves an unprotected void above through which fire and smoke spread to adjacent compartments without restriction. All installations follow manufacturer specifications exactly; deviations in stud spacing or board layer count invalidate the fire resistance rating regardless of the materials used.

Intumescent Fire Sealants and Fire Stopping

Every cable, pipe, conduit, and duct penetration through a fire-rated wall or floor creates a potential fire pathway through the compartment boundary. Multi Goals installs intumescent pipe collars for plastic pipes (which melt in a fire leaving an open hole), fire stopping boards and mortars for large cable bundles, intumescent foam sealants for small gaps around single cables or pipe groups, and fire-rated duct wraps for metal HVAC ducts passing through compartment boundaries. All products are certified to EN 1366.

Intumescent Fire Sealants for Linear Gaps
Intumescent Fire Sealants for Linear Gaps

Intumescent Fire Sealants for Linear Gaps

Flexible intumescent fire sealant applied to linear gaps at compartment boundaries, floor-to-wall junctions, and structural movement joints. Expands under heat to fill and seal the gap, maintaining compartment integrity at joints that may open over the life of the building due to structural movement.

Fire Blankets

Passive fire protection devices that smother Class F cooking oil fires by cutting off oxygen supply. Required by Saudi Civil Defense in all commercial kitchens and food service areas. Multi Goals supplies CE-marked fire blankets in 1m standard and 1.2m x 1.8m large formats with staff training on correct deployment, which matters because an incorrectly deployed fire blanket can spread a cooking oil fire rather than suppress it.

Passive Fire Protection in Annual Maintenance Contracts

Passive fire protection is not a one-time installation. Propped-open fire rated doors, fire stopping disturbed by post-handover cable changes, and self-closers that have been disconnected are the most common deficiencies found at Saudi Arabia Civil Defense annual licence inspections. Multi Goals includes passive fire protection inspection as a standard element of every annual maintenance contract, not as a separate charge. Related terms: fire rated door, fire barrier, fire sealant, fire blanket, fire stopping, compartmentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Active systems, alarms, sprinklers, and suppression, require activation through sensors or manual operation. Passive fire protection, fire rated doors, barriers, and fire stopping, is built into the building structure and works continuously without any trigger, power supply, or human intervention. Saudi Civil Defense requires both layers in all applicable buildings.

Yes. Fire rated doors are required at stairwell enclosures, plant rooms, car park boundaries, and compartment walls in all commercial, industrial, and multi-storey residential buildings. The required rating (FD30 to FD120) depends on occupancy and compartment size per SBC 801.

Fire stopping seals every penetration through a fire-rated wall or floor, cables, pipes, and ducts, using tested intumescent products that expand under heat to block fire and smoke passage. Required at every penetration under SBC 801 and a frequent Civil Defense annual inspection failure when disturbed by post-handover cable changes.

A compartment wall that terminates at the suspended ceiling leaves an unprotected void above it through which fire and smoke spread freely to adjacent compartments. The compartment boundary must extend from structural floor to structural floor above to achieve the rated fire resistance period. Walls that stop at ceiling height provide no real compartmentation above the ceiling level.

Yes. We supply and install fire rated doors, fire barriers, fire stopping, fire sealants, and fire blankets across all regions of Saudi Arabia from our Al Khobar headquarters.
